D2 is mainly of plant origin and D3 is derived from animal sources. Vitamin D is recommended for infants and young children in the form of oil. Aiming for the shortage of symptoms is 400 to 500 international units per day (or IU) up to 1000 IU safely. The child is advised to continue vitamin D supplementation continuously for up to 1 year, and for 2-3 years only in the sunny months (October to May). Doses are higher in the case of an established angina pectoris, and following the introduction, the physician estimates that continuous use of up to 1000-5000 IU of vitamin D may be required for prolonged periods.

In infants and children, inadequate vitamin D supply can lead to rickets, defective mineralization of the bones, and loss of weight. The fast-growing bones were the ones most affected.

Even in adults, 100 to 500 times the recommended amount, while in children, taking doses of 10 to 100 times a few months may be sufficient to cause excessive and abnormal vitamin D levels. Symptoms of vitamin D overdose may include headache, nausea, vomiting, loss of strength, weakness, and muscular bone pain. Persistent high levels of calcium in the blood can cause frequent or nocturnal urinary tract irritation, white water, kidney stones, and limescale calcification. The above symptoms of overdose can be reversed when vitamin D intake is reduced over time. At the same time, calcium supplements should be discontinued and, in severe cases, glucocorticoids may need medical attention.

The recommended daily dose for pregnant women is the same as for non-pregnant adults, which is 10 micrograms (400 IU). According to some experts, there is a slight increase in the need during pregnancy, especially in the sun-deprived area, but this has not been adequately supported by scientific data. Based on in vitro experimental data, the recommended daily intake of vitamin D by the mother contributes to correct bone formation in the developing fetus. Due to the potential for teratogenic (fetal toxicity) effects of vitamin D overdose, administration of doses higher than the above values ​​should only occur with the agreement of the treating physician.
